Issues
BIG members are engaged in a number of issues that are
critical to the protection and growth of meaningful and
well-paid jobs in Baltimore.
Jobs for Baltimore
- Our member businesses employ people from across Baltimore at good, family-sustaining jobs and many have done so for more than a century. These businesses, with the right support from the State and City, will continue to invest and be a source of excellent jobs for generations to come here in Baltimore.
- The industrial sector, particularly manufacturers, are responsible for creating jobs well beyond their own payroll including jobs in transportation, warehousing, and service and construction contracting. The bulk of jobs in the industrial sector do not require a college degree, yet provide a family-sustaining wage and include benefits such as health care and retirement plans. Many of our employers are able to provide training to assist employees in advancing their careers and increasing their pay.
- To retain and grow good jobs in Baltimore, we must protect the industrial sector.
BIG Advocates
- Apprenticeship programs to prepare potential employees to fill the hundreds of quality jobs available today in the industrial sector.
- Adequate public transportation to ensure that employees can get to the workplace.
Maritime Industrial District
- To continue to provide and grow employment, investment must continue around the Port and in port-related facilities. That’s why BIG has actively engaged in efforts to protect and preserve precious maritime industrial land in the City of Baltimore. BIG helped spearhead the creation of the Maritime Industrial Zoning Overlay District (MIZOD) in 2004 and supported the establishment of the permanent Maritime Industrial (MI) District in 2016.
- The MI District encourages investment in Baltimore's maritime industries by protecting limited deep-water land from the encroachment of non-industrial uses.
BIG advocates:
- The preservation of the MI District and promotion of other public policies that seek to preserve maritime industrial properties, protect maritime-related uses, and support intermodal freight movement.

Truck Routes
- Truck and train routes through the City are vital corridors of commerce that interconnect the public and private maritime terminals to warehouses, manufacturers and distributors. Designated truck routes are also used to convey products to retail outlets throughout the City and are essential for preserving high paying jobs at businesses that rely on the road network and, most importantly, diminish truck traffic through often disadvantaged neighborhoods and communities. Predictable and reliable truck routes are just as vital to a working port as deep water.
BIG advocates:
- The safe and efficient use of the City’s transportation infrastructure by all users.
- Dedicated truck routes to foster the flow of commerce and protect the integrity of neighborhoods.
