Welcome to the Baltimore Industrial Group Website

Founded in 2005, the Baltimore Industrial Group (BIG) was established by prominent public and private businesses and organizations in Baltimore to advocate for industry and maritime operations.

BIG represents an array of businesses involved in manufacturing, transportation, maritime, shipping and warehousing. Our members alone employ 16,000 people directly and indirectly in the Baltimore metropolitan area and generate billions of dollars in annual revenue and taxes.

BIG's mission centers on supporting industry and maritime initiatives and improving the public's understanding of our issues.

Our Mission:

The Baltimore Industrial Group is committed to protecting and growing the industrial sector so it can continue to provide good jobs to Baltimoreans, contribute to a thriving Port and encourage further investment in our City.

Our Beliefs:

  • We believe in providing good jobs with family-sustaining wages. Entry level jobs in manufacturing, warehousing, transportation and maritime pay significantly higher than jobs in retail, food service, entertainment and healthcare.
  • We believe jobs in industry and maritime operations play a vital role in supporting the regional economy. A healthy mix of businesses that include these activities is essential to the future of Baltimore and Maryland.
  • We believe in being good stewards of the environment. Our members strive to exceed government standards for environmental compliance and support environmental organizations working to improve the health of our air and waterways.
  • We believe the Port of Baltimore and its infrastructure, including terminals, rail lines, truck routes are incredible assets to the region which must be maintained.

  • BIG members are engaged in a number of issues that are critical to their businesses.

  • BIG members have worked hard to create and preserve the Maritime Industrial Zoning Overlay District, or MIZOD, and subsequently the establishment of the Maritime Industrial (M1) district which protects this precious waterfront property for industrial use. For BIG members, it is imperative that current industrially-zoned land must be retained for future expansion of industry and maritime operations.

  • BIG supports efforts that will preserve or create clearly defined truck routes through the city that allow for goods and materials to be delivered quickly and efficiently.

  • BIG members have invested heavily in their infrastructure and operations that play a key role in the city's future. Industry and maritime operations have been a critical and vitalizing part of Baltimore's economic base since the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th Century. BIG members are optimistic that their businesses can continue to thrive.
